Advocacy - Women In Action
We are all women in action, and so this is less of a special interest group and more of an opportunity for all members to participate in exercising their own leadership. As we learned at the October Persons Day event and the 2018 Leadership Retreat, exercising one’s own leadership muscle is an important contributing factor in how we share our inner purpose and connect to our community. And that makes good sense for our own health! Women in Action meets at 2:00 p.m. on the first Friday of the month at Lynn Trapnell-Cormier’s home. All are welcome! We would love to have you join us.
Resolutions
Advocating for policy changes to improve the lives of women and girls in Canada and around the world is fundamental to our work as an organization and network of Clubs. We engage decision makers, like-minded organizations and the public to advance our membership's vision of a more just world.
Resolutions adopted by the CFUW membership nationally and provincially are the foundation for our advocacy activities. These resolutions deal with issues relevant to CFUW's mandate to enhance the status of women and girls, promote education and human rights and encourage the participation of members in their communities.
Resolutions are researched and proposed by CFUW clubs, Provincial or National Boards and/or National Federations. They are studied by the clubs, voted on at club level, amended where necessary, and subsequently approved through a vote, at either the Ontario Council Annual General Meeting in May or the CFUW Annual General Meeting in the summer. Similarly, resolutions of Graduate Women International (GWI) are studied and proposed by a National Federation or Association, and voted on by delegates from these 79 National Federations and Associations worldwide.
These democratically adopted resolutions give CFUW National and the Ontario Council legitimacy to lobby and petition the federal or provincial governments on matters of importance to club members. Clubs may also petition their federal (MP), provincial (MPP) and municipal governments to advance the CFUW agenda at the local level.
If you have any advocacy areas that are near and dear to your heart, do let us know and we’ll find the CFUW policy that relates to it and review it with you. And if the policy doesn’t yet exist, we can work together to develop a new intention for a resolution. The simple half-page resolution intent forms are due on November 15 annually.
